Gandhinagar, Delhi-31 used to be a residential area in the early days. And today, With around 14,000 shops and 5,000 manufacturing facilities, Gandhinagar Market is Asia’s largest wholesale market for Readymade Garments.
Gandhinagar, Delhi-31 used to be a residential area in the early days. It was in 1972-73 when some shops opened in the area. People who used to run their shops in the weekly market on the other side of Yamuna started to re-stock from here. And with time, new shops opened and the number of shops only went up after that. Before this, traders used to buy their stock wholesale from the markets of Sadar Bazaar and Azad Market. But only in 2-3 years, many shops opened in Gandhinagar that started to attract a major portion of the footfall of Sadar Bazaar and Azad Market.
During 19-75-76, the traders of Gandhinagar started providing ready-made clothing from Kolkata and Hosiery from Ludhiana by sourcing from suppliers in these respective cities at wholesale. This attracted a lot of retail traders in Delhi and around the adjoining states of Delhi who wanted or used to go to Kolkata or Ludhiana to source their lot.
The law and order situation in Punjab during the 80s was shaken due to political unrest. The result of this was more retail traders coming to the Gandhinagar market to buy instead of going to Punjab to buy their stock, while Kolkata was far anyway. In the meantime, businessmen from Ludhiana also started to migrate to Delhi and they also set up their shops in Gandhinagar as well. In a blink of an eye, the Gandhinagar market became so vast that it started to attract traders in volumes from all across India. So much so, that today, Gandhinagar Market is Asia’s largest wholesale market for Readymade Garments.
Wholesale traders from Delhi and all across India have moved to Gandhinagar, Delhi-31 to open their shops to supply readymade garments to match its moving demand. And what’s interesting to know is that today, these traders & suppliers now manufacture the readymade garments by themselves in their factories that they have set up in the outskirt areas of Delhi like Tronica City & Noida sector 63.
The areas of Gandhinagar like Ashok Bazaar, Subhash Road, Ram Nagar, Shanti Mohalla, Cloth Market Old Seelampur Road, and Raghuwarpura Road are the biggest commercial spot of the market and are also known as the tailoring material market. What’s interesting to note is that the Gandhinagar Textile Industry employs about 80-85% of residents the Delhi-31 area. From traders to manufacturers, staff, artisans, and tailoring material manufacturers everyone is working and adding value to this industry. And not just that, many small-scale domestic industries have flourished with time.
In total, around 14,000 shops and 5,000 manufacturing facilities in this industry put food on the table of around 3-4 lakh people who are associated with the Gandhinagar industry. Every trader or manufacturer here is paying for utilities like electricity, water, and other bills at commercial rates which is a positive sign for the whole industry. With the medium of GST, the whole industry is contributing Crores of rupees in the form of taxes to the government.
The residential areas of the Gandhinagar Market area have almost gone to zero. Earlier the Gandhinagar area was considered a backward area where no one would like to go. But today it is known as Asia’s biggest commercial center. Today, there’s hardly any area in this market that is not generating huge sums revenue.
Gandhinagar is recognized as a Domestic Industry in the Vidhan Sabha. All the manufacturing units and trading centres are pollution-free and every business here makes a collective effort to operate without causing any kind of pollution whatsoever. The whole industry here is pollution-free.
Just like that the whole market slowly made its way to become not just Asia’s biggest but the world’s biggest Wholesale ready-made garment market. This market has seen major progress time after time to turn into Delhi’s one of busiest commercial spots.
Today this market is known for the variety of garments that are accessible here. You’ll find all the latest designs that are in trend right now. Till now the garments here were only made to cater for the Middle & Lower class segment. But recently, a premium clothing range priced at the higher end is also being provided.
In recent years, the quality of the garments available at Gandhinagar Readymade Garments Market has improved drastically. All the traders and manufacturers have adapted to the changes in tastes and preferences of the modern consumer. Customers today prefer quality over price now. With time, our traders have also developed their brands that are known countrywide. The fame of their brands has also made the Gandhinagar market popular. The manufacturers here in the Gandhinagar market source high-quality raw materials from mills and by combining top-class tailoring material and packaging material, traders here are providing garments finished in high quality. At the Gandhinagar market, you will find garments of various kinds of qualities.
The best thing about the Gandhinagar market is that this market sources its stock from the major readymade garment manufacturing states. Traders of the Gandhinagar market provide products that are manufactured in the textile industries of Ludhiana, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Tripur, Ahmedabad and various other cities. It is not economically viable for small shopkeepers to order goods for their stock from these different cities. So Delhi’s Gandhinagar Market is the only place where you can find readymade garments and goods brought from all over the country giving us the flexibility to customize according to the client’s requirements.
It was in 1972-73 when this place started to shape into a market. Back then, the number of shops could be counted on fingertips. The shopkeepers mutually agreed to form a market committee in the market’s interests. The committee formed was assigned with the duties of solving all kinds of problems for the shopkeepers and taking care of customers’ interests as well. As the size of the market grew, the penetration of shops and commercial stores intervened in the residential areas of the Gandhinagar area. This posed quite a challenge in front of the shopkeepers. But in 1980-81 this market was registered systematically.
The committee has always gone above and beyond in coordinating with authorities from time to time to eradicate any challenges that would prevent ease of doing business. Today, this committee works with Delhi Government & the Central Government to secure the interests of the Gandhinagar Market and its traders.
